STUDIO VISIT WITH WESLEY KIMLER
NEXT, the alumni magazine of the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, sent me to Chicago for a studio visit with former student Wesley Kimler. Before it was Kimler’s studio, the space was used for Sketchbook, the premier Midwest short play festival—so it makes sense that walking inside feels like stepping backstage—and has hosted other art gatherings and happenings since. His towering paintings are lit with theatrical lighting while the rest of the studio is dim. It’s very much its own world—dark, moody, messy. A place for Kimler to dream up his creations and give them life.
